Job Summary:

The Department Head for the Educational Resources Department is the educational and administrative head of the Department and shall report directly to the Dean of the School of Education, who is responsible to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs for the successful management of the Educational Resources Department. The Department Head is responsible for supporting and advancing the allied missions of the department, school, academic and arts programs, and for enforcing University and Departmental policies and procedures. The Educational Resources Department Head will articulate a shared vision that defines the departments’ standard of excellence, the directions of growth for the department, and the programmatic and interdisciplinary connections that are possible across the university.

Essential Functions:

• Responsible for leading the future development of the Educational Resources department, setting a strategic vision, and establishing and maintaining long and short term goals.
• Develops and articulates departmental goals.
• Promotes the academic quality of the department and discipline.
• Monitors progress toward the Department’s strategic plan, and initiates and recommends adjustments to the plan as needed and appropriate.
• In collaboration with the Dean of the School of Education, oversees all personnel matters involving academic and non-academic employees.
• Articulates the budgetary needs of the Department as necessary.
• Formulates and communicates recommendations for hiring, tenure, promotion, retention, and evaluation of faculty and departmental support staff.
• Oversees the development, implementation, and assessment of curriculum.
• Provides leadership for department’s responsibilities for various accreditations.
• Integrates and coordinates departmental programs for student educational experiences with other units of the University and community partners to improve curricula, recruiting, enrolling, and retaining students.
• Facilitates distribution of and compilation of data from evaluation tools involving student evaluation.
• Maintains effective communication between students, faculty, and administrators within the Department, School and with other University unit personnel.
• Works closely with other university constituents to provide a wide range of student- and university-centered programming for students.
• Reviews policies and procedures to ensure safety for students, staff, and faculty.
• Serves on committees as needed or assigned, including university committees, professional and external organizations and groups.
• Facilitates faculty development within the parameters of the University, and coaches and mentors departmental faculty and staff.
• Manages the departmental assessment process and conducts periodic departmental reviews.
• Disseminates policy changes and pertinent information from Department Head meetings to Educational Resources faculty and staff in a timely manner.
• Travels to professional meetings, committee activities, professional development activities, and other events as needed and required by the Department, School or University.
• Responds to student petitions, degree applications, complaints, requests, etc.
• Recommends teaching assignments and teaching times to the dean and regulating faculty workloads.
• Provides input into the preparation of class schedules.
• Appoints and monitors departmental committees.
• Recommends leaves and special assignments to the dean
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
• An earned doctorate in one of the following Educational Leadership, Counselor Education and Supervision, Instructional Technology, Higher Education Administration, or a related field
• A minimum of one (1) year administrative experience such as department head, assistant department, director, assistant director, program leader/coordinator, or similar responsibility
• The successful candidate will also have accomplishments sufficient to meet requirements of the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at JSU in teaching, service, and scholarly publications

Preferred Qualifications:
• A successful record of full-time University teaching experience with an earned rank of Associate Professor or Professor preferred
