Job Summary:

The Dean is the chief administrator of the School and is responsible for providing academic and administrative leadership that fosters excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, and service. The Dean manages the human and fiscal resources of the School, sets goals through strategic planning, supports and develops academic programs, and represents the School and the University to the public.

Essential Functions:

• Provides leadership in establishing and achieving the School’s vision, mission, goals, and student learning outcomes.
• Ensures compliance with the accreditation requirements of SACSCOC, as well as the Department of Education.
• Supervises and evaluates School department heads, directors, and dean’s office staff. Provides administrative and staff organizational/leadership development.
• Collaborates with faculty and staff for development, organization, operation, assessment, and continuous improvement of the education academic programs, including all majors, concentrations, minors, bachelor’s, master’s, and certificate programs. Encourages excellence in instruction through professional development of faculty.
• Utilizes collaboration in establishing and maintaining robust alliances external to the School and/or University.
• Directs problem solving involving students, faculty, staff, and administrators across the School.
• Effectively manages the School’s budget, inclusive of budget recommendations and reviews departmental budgets. Manages appropriate accounts in the JSU Foundation.
• Suggests fiscal and infrastructure needs to ensure optimal functioning of the School, its departments, and its support units.
• Directs continuous evaluation, improvement and systematic reporting of student, faculty, and program outcomes.
• Encourages and supports research and creative activities of the faculty and students of the School, including the planning and organizing of in-service educational programs.
• Serves as a liaison between the School’s department heads and faculty and upper administration.
• Promotes, publicizes, and represents the School’s programs.
• Reads and remains current on contracts, grants, University policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations affecting higher education.
• Oversees School committees, serves on University and professional committees, represents the School or University on committees external to the University.
• Maintains effective communication with faculty, staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders.
• Directs School and departmental advancement and fundraising; oversees the School of Education Board of Visitors.
• Oversees the promotion and tenure process for the faculty of the School.
• Attends and participates in professional conferences and meetings on and off campus.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
• Academic program assessment, regional accreditation, and specialized accreditations.
• Education law.
• Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point), and Adobe Acrobat.
• Administrative Banner.

• Effective time management skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Monitoring and assessment skills to help ensure necessary enhancements and/or corrective action is taken.
• Activing listening skills to help ensure the needs of all parties are considered and represented.

• Expert pedagogical knowledge and experience in traditional and online programs at the baccalaureate and masters level in arts and humanities.
• High level of fluency in the English language, inclusive of but not limited to professional documents related to higher education, education law, and arts and humanities education.
• Proficiency in computer skills and teaching platforms i.e. Blackboard.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
• Earned Doctorate in education
• Three years’ experience as an academic administrator, leading an academic unit at a regionally accredited college or university, required.
• Three years’ university-level teaching experience at a regionally accredited college or university, required.
