Job Summary:

General tutors provide individual and small group tutoring to students in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE)Tutoring Center or at a campus satellite tutoring center. Tutors assist students academically by meeting with students on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and work on study skills. Other assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems. Tutoring is a supplement to classroom teaching. Tutors may also provide drop-in tutoring assistance to students based on requests for academic assistance. This position involves mandatory training, reporting, and evaluations.

Essential Functions:

Tutors must attend mandatory training sessions and required workshops, be flexible and available to work outside of their class schedules, must be dependable and punctual for scheduled appointments, complete tutorial reports in a timely manner, and work well with students in an academic environment. Additionally, tutors must be willing to work with a diverse student population.

Physical Requirements:

Speaks and listens to others, in person, over the telephone and electronically.
Makes presentations to large and small groups.
Reads documents written in English.
Uses a computer keyboard and monitor.
Moves from building to building on campus.

Minimum Qualifications

1) Minimum of 3.0 college GPA required.

2) Must have earned an A or B in all courses you wish to tutor.

3) Have a faculty recommendation.

4) Must have completed at least one semester of full-time attendance to JSU.

5) Applicants must attach under “Transcript” an unofficial copy of their student transcript as evidence of student enrollment and GPA.

Notice Regarding International Students:

Due to Visa requirements international students must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student taking at least 12 hours (per fall or spring semester) and possess each of the following:
a. Passport from their respective country.
b. F-1 Student Visa or J-1 Exchange Student Visa.
c. U.S. Customs Form I-94.
d. Official photo identification.
e. Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement.
